Il y a trois semaines, un personnage m’est apparu en rêve. Un homme si intéressant que j’ai immédiatement décidé de lui donner vie.

Auparavant, je ne comprenais pas très bien l’idée que des personnages puissent venir à nous. Une de mes amies m’en avait parlé, mais je pensais qu’il s’agissait plutôt de les inventer petit à petit, pièce par pièce. Je pensais qu’il y avait un choix conscient, mais je me rends compte que ce n’est pas toujours le cas.

En tous cas, le thérapeute peu ordinaire de mon rêve est le personnage le plus riche et le plus surprenant que j’aie inventé. Mais l’ai-je inventé ou s’est-il inventé tout seul?

Week-end écriture

Une amie et moi nous faisons un petit week-end écriture. Je n’ai aucune idée de ce que ça va donner, mais nous savons toutes les deux que nous allons nous inspirer. Elle doit travailler sur une pièce de théâtre et moi sur mon histoire ou sur mon recueil de mini textes. Peut-être que le fait d’être deux nous mènera complètement ailleurs. J’aimerais bien focaliser sur mon histoire, mais je me sens un peu déconnectée.

Je vais aussi en profiter pour relire ce que j’ai écrit à Londres. J’ai eu un bon moment d’inspiration un matin, je suis curieuse de voir ce que ça donne lu à froid…

I was lying on the grass in Primrose Hill and wanted the inspiration to come.
I was sitting in a Nero coffee shop in Camden and wanted the inspiration to come.
I was sitting in a coffee shop having breakfast in Notting Hill, admiring the view, and the inspiration came.

What can we do when we don’t feel like writing, even though we’d really want to take a moment to do so?

I tried to write anyway, whatever came to me. A comment about the girls sitting next to me. A word written on a newspaper. I just let my imagination go…I’m not saying the result was interesting. In fact, I don’t know…I haven’t reread what I wrote in London.

I think I’ll do the same today. Just type on my computer. Words won’t make sense, but maybe I’ll find something in this mess, in this vomit. Good ideas and pure expression don’t always come from beauty after all.

In fact, when I have ideas, I’d rather type on my computer. When I know things will get messy, I prefer to write in my little notebook. It feels more organic.

London

I went to London last week. The only purpose of that trip was to write, and I’m very happy I did it, even if I didn’t write as much as I wanted to. Sometimes life gets in the way.

It was very interesting to have a few days free and to know I’d only do a few things: write, walk, and be in my world.

I was very happy to be by myself. I never felt alone. The only thing that bugged me is that inspiration didn’t come when I wanted it to (obviously).

I know I’ll do another trip like this one before the end of the year. Will it be London? I don’t know. I think so, but I’m not sure. Probably not Paris, because it takes me too much energy. I don’t think I’d be relaxed enough.

Hannah Friedman, a Yale grad student who just finished writing her first book Everything Sucks (correct me if I’m wrong), answered a few questions about writing on her blog.

I wouldn’t consider myself an author (yet?), but I will definitely follow her advice.

Je viens de finir Un secret, de Philippe Grimbert. Une histoire courte, une écriture simple, précise, efficace autant que touchante. Les thèmes de l’holocauste, des secrets de famille et d’un frère pas si irréel que ça.

Je vous le conseille.

Cormac came to me

I often imagine that books pick readers, not the othe way around. I was at the bookstore the other day, and I saw The Road, by Cormac McCarthy, on the shelf in front of me. Just like that, it caught my eye. So I brought it home and started reading it. I’m not sure a story about the apocalypse is what I need now, but I’ll finish it anyway.

Je n’ai vraiment plus envie de me censurer. J’ai envie d’éparpiller un peu partout les mots qui sortent de mon esprit, de ma bouche, mais aussi ceux qui entrent par mes oreilles et par ma peau.

Hier, sur mon blog personnel, j’ai publié un tout petit texte qui m’est venu au détour d’une rue, en attendant que le feu vire au vert. Ça a commencé par une phrase, “Tu sonnes creux, mon pauvre amour”, et puis les mots ont commencé à tisser leur fil. C’est rare que le fil soit long. À peine un paragraphe ou deux. De petits jets que je m’exerce à transformer en rivière. Le texte est ici.

Je redécouvre le monde des contes et je commence par celui des contes inuit. En voilà un qui me touche beaucoup. En plus, le dessin animé est très poétique, vous ne trouvez pas?
